Carrie Carolin

You might remember me from The Dark Side of the Net, a curated goth webpage I ran for over 25 years, beginning in 1993. I also run Dark Side University (currently on hiatus) and Goth Shopaholic. I am a voracious reader, especially now that the pandemic has given me more downtime at home. I read dark fantasy and science fiction; literary horror (but not gory slashers); gothic tales; lots of non-fiction; and an unnerving amount of Pride and Prejudice variations fanfic. A sprinkling of my favorite authors include Kristine Kathryn Rusch; Stephen King; Frank Herbert and Larry Niven; Andre Norton; Anne Rice; Orson Scott Card; Shirley Jackson; Joanne Harris; and of course, Edgar Allan Poe.

I live in a book-cluttered home tucked away in the woods near rainy, deliciously gloomy Seattle, Washington. Most nights find me cozy by the fireplace with my dogs (Edgar Allan Poe Carolin and Victor Frankenstein Carolin), my boyfriend, and my laptop/Kindle/TV/books for entertainment. Always on the lookout for new dark and gothic books, TV shows and movies to explore and to share with you!

Ever since I was young I always had an affinity to “the dark side”. I would fearlessly watch Jurassic Park in the basement alone at 3 years old then grow to adore movies like Silence of the Lambs as a pre-teen. Growing up, Carrie gave me a helping hand at exposing me to dark literature, music, and culture that has become integral in my adult life.

I studied Anthropology in college, which has only encouraged my need to explore all the crevices of human nature.  The dark side, to me, is a mirror that reflects all aspects of ourselves that we may or may not embrace.

Currently, I write for Goth Shopaholic and more. My passion for dark fantasy graphic novels, like “The Sandman” and “Fables”,  has inspired me to write and draw my own stories on the side.

I, too, reside in moody Seattle embracing all Mother Nature has to offer. Typically, you will find me buried under my 3 cats who use me as furniture. My husband and I will often use our spare time to watch horror movies, some in suspense and others laughably terrible, but all enjoyable. Other days I am wandering spooky forests off the beaten trail listening to heavy metal or finding places of solitude in the rain. I look forward to sharing a space with you on the Dark Side of the Library!
